Scores of beaches have been closed off the US coast after hundreds of man-eating sharks were spotted circling Atlantic waters. Closures are in place around the Cape Cod and Nantucket areas, after shark sightings caused officials to issue swimming bans. The Sharktivity app, from the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, which allows users to track shark sightings, has been lit all summer, with around 300 sightings reported. Since Monday alone, 20 great whites have been confirmed off the Massachusetts coastline from Provincetown in the north down to Monomoy Island in the south. Newcomb Hollow beach, the scene of a fatal shark attack last September, was closed on Monday due to fears for swimmers from the 17ft killer beasts who are known to stalk prey for miles. Lifeguards are also trained to respond to shark attacks and treat bites by stopping any bleeds with tourniquets. However if a victim is 300 yards off shore it is unlikely they can be saved. In a recent Facebook post the shark conservancy warn: "We remind Cape residents and visitors that August-October are the peak months of white shark activity off our coast. "Please adhere to all signage and flag warnings at beaches and follow instructions of the lifeguards." It comes following the tragic death of a surfer 26-year-old Arthur Medici, in the area last September. Arthur was bitten and killed at Newcomb Hollow Beach, marking the first fatal shark attack in 80 years. A 21-year-old woman killed in the Bahamas in June after she had her arm torn off and was bitten all over her body and had her arm ripped off by three sharks. Californian student Jordan Lindsay was snorkelling with her family near Rose Island in the Bahamas before she was savaged. While snorkelling, her family tried to warn her three sharks were headed her away. Meanwhile around the Eastern Seaboard there have been reports of Great Whites circling boats, targeting other aquatic life and turning the water red with blood. Some retailers have stopped selling shark-related merchandise around Cape Code amid fears tourists were being put off visiting its shores.
