People from across Hull and East Yorkshire have been left baffled after a bizarre orange-red glowing light was spotted in the night sky. The strange lights were first reported at around 9.30pm on Wednesday night. One resident Sarah Sharpe described it as looking like a "giant car indicator has been left on" as the sky was lit up for several minutes. Reports came in throughout the night, with many saying the lights were on the other side of the Humber Estuary. Lights were also seen coming from the North Lincolnshire coast. Fiona Downie shared a video of the flashing lights on Twitter, writing: "What is happening with the sky?! Anyone else in Hull seeing this?" While Craig Sheard tweeted: "Just me or does anyone else see this weird orange light in the sky tonight or am I missing something that's going on tonight in Hull?" In videos shared on a residents' Facebook group, there is no sound as the eerie lights pulse in the sky. The source of the light is believed to be from natural gas refineries in the North Sea. A spokesman for Humberside Police told Hull Live : "We've had a few calls re the red glow over the south bank of the Humber which we believe to be excess gas being burned off at an Immingham refinery." They added that the lights were "nothing to be concerned about". Humberside Fire and Rescue have also investigated the lights after receiving reports of a fire near the Immingham Docks. "There was nothing for us to put out as the orange glow in the sky is just a flare stack created by a routine burning at the oil refinery," a spokesman said.
