An ex-con says crooks are getting locked up on purpose so they can smuggle drugs and phones into jails. Simon Grundy, 48, was sentenced to 11 months in prison last year for perverting the course of justice. And he said he was shocked at what went on behind bars. The former ministry of Defence worker, right, said he met around 10 inmates who claimed to have got themselves jailed deliberately after being offered up to £1,000 a time to bring in contrabrand. Simon claimed one , who he met in September last year, had been jailed for a month for shoplifting. He said: “He had been in prison nine times before and had come in on purpose. “He told me he had been paid £1,000 to bring a phone in with him. It was one of those really small phones and he shoved it inside him to get it past the prison officers. “This sort of thing is happening every week. They know they’ll only get a month, max, for something like shoplifting, so to them it’s worth it for the money.” Simon, from said smuggled goods were handed over during recreation times in prison yards, with payment managed by wives and girlfriends on the outside. He said: “ I could have got any drug that I wanted while inside. “Drug deals go on every day. The amount of Spice in that place is unbelievable.” Only last year it was revealed letters sent to prisoners were being photocopied by wardens over fears they were soaked in drugs. Simon’s dad Richard served as a prison officer for 30 years before his death in 2006, aged 61. He said his dad would be “disgusted” at how the prison system is being “abused” by inmates, adding: “It’s beyond anything I ever thought. “Taxpayers are paying for this exploitation of the system. To see how badly the system is being abused is upsetting. A Prison Service spokesman said: “We cannot allow our prisons to become factories for making bad people worse, which is why the Prime Minister recently announced plans to invest £100million to boost security and safety and spend up to £2.5billion to create 10,000 new prison places. “This will help stop the drugs, weapons and mobile phones coming in.”
